Course: FA DATT 2940: Foundations of 3D Design and Fabrication
Semester: 5th (WS 23/24) at York University, Toronto (Canada)
My Roles: Concept, Project Management & Development
Teamsize: 1
Tools: Rhino, Affinity Designer
Hardware: Prusa Mk3, Laser Cutter
During this course at York University, I gained proficiency in utilizing various tools within the woodshop environment. Our curriculum encompassed understanding material variances and honing techniques for effective manipulation.
Project 1
Our initial challenge tasked us with constructing a protective case for an egg, utilizing common household materials. The objective was to engineer a design capable of withstanding drops from various heights without compromising the egg’s integrity.
Project 2
Transitioning to the next project, I embarked on a more conceptual endeavor. Provided with a wooden plane, the task was to maximize its utilization. I conceived a miniature abstract table, leveraging the diverse array of tools available in the woodshop – including the drill, table saw, and hand saws. Emphasizing the importance of meticulous sanding, my creation embodies a balance between positive and negative spaces, exemplifying the culmination of technique exploration.
Project 3
After completing my second, more abstract project, I aimed to create something practical for everyday use, compact enough to accompany me on my flight home. My search using specific keywords led me to design an iPhone stand for my bedside table. I combined different designs to craft the perfect version for my needs.
The primary enhancement involved adding a hole in the part where the phone rests, allowing it to be charged while remaining on the stand. Another improvement was the adjustable seat part, enabling a better horizontal view of the phone.
Using a laser cutter, I engraved a pattern inspired by pictures from my research but designed by myself. With extra time on hand, I created a second stand for my watch, choosing 3D printing over the laser cutter. The round shape where the watch sits drew inspiration from Lamborghini rims, serving as a motivational trigger for me every morning, as cars are a significant passion of mine.
Both stands feature quotes that hold deep meaning for me, reminiscent of my childhood and continuing to inspire and motivate me to this day.
